Two Types of RC Planes

There are two main types of RC planes, trainers and acrobats. Trainers are the type of planes that are designed for those that are new to the hobby. These trainers are very affordable for those who just want to get their feet wet. They usually cost somewhere between the $40 to $100 range. Most trainers either come already built or are very easily put together with a few simple tools.

Trainers are usually powered electrically with simple AA batteries. This means that they are not overly fast and do not have a long range of flying. However, these are good attributes for beginning RC plane flyers. Low speed craft are easy to fly at almost any local park, and they do not need huge open spaces in order to use them. Also, many trainers are built out of foam, which helps them survive the rough landings that beginning RC pilots are infamous for.

Acrobat RC planes are more advanced than trainers. They usually start around $100, and top end models can run up to $2000 or more, similar to the cost of a second hand car or a luxury bed. These acrobat planes can have electric power, but they are more often powered by gasoline engines. These gasoline-powered engines are much more powerful than electric engines, and they greatly increase both the range and the speed of a RC plane.

The acrobat RC planes are called acrobats because they can perform more maneuvers than the trainers. They have the ability to pull off the same kind of complex maneuvers as full-sized aircraft, and in fact these acrobats are usually just scale-models of real planes.

Acrobat flyers often need to be put together by their owners, which is a skill that takes some experience and a lot of patience. They will also generally be more fragile, tougher to fly and more difficult to maintain than trainers.

Flying a RC Plane

Flyers need to go to a large field to launch their planes into the air. Most local parks are okay for trainers. Practice flying very low and slow at first. Practice takeoffs and landings over and over again until they become second nature. These are the maneuvers that cause the most problems for RC pilots, just like pilots of full-size aircraft. Always be sure to look carefully for obstacles before attempting any takeoff or landing.

Prepare the model pieces by washing them with water and a little dish soap and allowing it to dry.
Before you build the model, test fit and remove seams and excess plastic which are not needed.
Use polystyrene cement to “weld” the pieces together. Make sure to hold the pieces firmly while drying.
Paint the cockpit part first to avoid hassle.
